- How long will they burn?
Each firestarter will burn for over 20 minutes. This is long enough so even damp or green wood will be ignited. Back to list of questions.
- How many does it take to start a fire?
Just one per fire. If your wood is wet, it may take two. The first one will dry the wood out and the second will ignite it. Back to list of questions.
- Will it clog up my chimney?
No. The newspaper ink is a much bigger culprit of creosote build up. When the ink melts it sticks to the chimney and everything else sticks to that, thereby causing a buildup in your chimney. Our firestarters get the fire going hotter, quicker and therefore actually reduce the amount of buildup in your chimney. Back to list of questions.
- Will it leave a residue in my fireplace?
No, the firestarter completely burns away. And the wax that is used will all evaporate, leaving nothing. Back to list of questions.
- How long will they last?
Because there are no acelerants, there is nothing to go bad. Therefore we like to say they have the shelf life of a Twinkie! In all seriousness they'll stay good for many years. So put them in your earthquake kit, keep one in your glove box for emergencies and rest assured it will be ready when you need it. Back to list of questions.
- What are they made of?
They are simply kiln dried sawdust and parafin wax pressed into a two ounce portion cup. Back to list of questions.
- Where are you located?
We manufacture all the firestarters in our garage in Renton, Washington. If you live in our area you can find us at various craft shows, of course we mail them out as well. Back to list of questions.
- What type of fireplace / woodstove can I use them in?
Any. Basically, anyplace you need to start a fire is a place to use a firestarter. Your fireplace, woodstove, bar-b-que, or campfire. We also use one when we want to make s'mores but don't want a whole fire. We simply light the firestarter and roast our marshmellow directly over it. The twenty minutes it burns is just about perfect for us, give it a try! Back to list of questions.
- What if they get wet?
Just shake it off and light it! Because of the wax content, the firestarter repels water. They also float! Back to list of questions.
- Why can't I make them myself?
You can, if you don't mind the mess, the smell, and the time and energy it takes. You may have a hard time finding quality sawdust, and the wax can get spendy unless you buy it in bulk. So, we're happy to do it for you. Afterall, this really is an item of convenience more than necessity. Back to list of questions.
- Do they work in pellet stoves?
Firestarters are too big for most pellet stoves, however we do make a smaller version specifically for starting pellets. Give us a call if you're interested. 1-888-741-8541 Back to list of questions.
